Fighting Fur

We have a bit of a pet hair problem in our house. There are three main causes of this problem.

Cause #1:
door 002

Cause #2:

And of course Cause #3:

Needless to say we are always finding pet fur everywhere. It's amazing how much these critters can shed. I fill up the canister in our vacuum every week with enough fur to sculpt another pet. (There's a great DIY project for ya!)The big bulk of the fur comes from the dog, but the cats leave their trace around the house as well. Since the dog is not allowed on the furniture, it is the cat's job to leave as much fur on the furniture as possible to make up for this.

I'm always looking for a good solution to remove pet fur from the furniture, pillows, bedding, and even the table runner on the dining table.(And the cats aren't even allowed on the dining table, but somehow it is always covered in fur.) The vacuum only does a so-so job of picking up fur from fabric and it's annoying to have to whip out all the fancy attachments just to suck up some fur. A lint roller just doesn't quite cut it because of the sheer infinite quantites of fur that appear. (Why are my pets not bald yet?) I had a coupon for the Pledge Fabric Sweeper for pet hair so I decided to give it a try. After the coupon I think it cost $3.62 at Wal-Mart.

It's basically a plastic box with rollers on the bottom. You sweep the contraption back and forth with short strokes across the fabric and the rollers pick up the fur and deposit it into the container on the top. I was a little skeptical because it feels rather flimsy and cheap.

Surpisingly, it worked quite well. I used in on the back of our sofa where the cats like to perch and it removed almost all the fur. I also used it on the fabric table runner in the dining room. Again, it worked very well and picked up a large amount of fur.

The only downside of the product is that I thought you could just empty the container portion when it was full of fur. However, the directions state that you throw it away when it is full and buy a new one. I think I can manage to pull it apart and empty it though. We'll find out when it gets full. There is another pet hair remover out there for fabric that is made by Scotch.  Has anyone else tried this Pledge product or the Scotch Fur Fighter version? Or do you have your own handy dandy home remedy to remove pet fur? Please share.

  1. I have a couple of the pledge pet hair remover, I guess I didn't even read the directions, because i always just pull those rollers out, or just one out and pull the hair out and push the roller back in...works great

  2. I have been considering trying this product but I, too, have been skeptical. I'm glad to hear it's working for you. I might have to pick one up after all, considering our two long-haired, black pets (one canine, one feline) shed more than they keep, I swear!, on a daily basis.

  3. Sorry - no suggestions. I am pet free right now due to bad allergies. Your fur babies sure are adorable.

  4. I feel your pain! I have two cats, one with long hair, and they both shed a good bit. I highly recommend "The Gonzo" pet hair lifter (you can find it on Amazon). I found one on sale at Linens and Things back when they went out of business and thought I'd give it a try...it works WAY better than any roller or sticky contraption I've tried. You can use it over and over again. It's kind of like a rubber sponge that you just wipe over the upholstery, and it clears all the hair away. Then you just pull the hair off and throw in the trash. Also...there's a product called the "Furminator" that is great at getting TONS of hair off of pets. I bought one and tried it on my cats and it got off so much more hair than a normal brush...less for them to leave on the couch!

    Hope this helps!

  5. Thanks for the tips Phyllis and Kristen! I love the Furminator! My MIL has one and I borrow it every once in a while to "furminate" the cats. I need to get my own, but they are a little expensive.
