Decorating Cabinet Tops

My house has really tall ceilings. My kitchen cabinets are not so tall. That leaves quite a large gap of empty space to fill between the tops of the cabinets and the ceiling. I had some blue bottles and vases up there for awhile while I was in my blue and yellow phase. That phase has passed and my cabinets had been looking a bit bare on top since I painted my kitchen walls last year.

I finally got around to adding a little bit of interest up there. I shopped around the house and managed to come up with a couple arrangements all using stuff I had on hand.

I used vases, plates, and other accessories to create the arrangements. The platter shown in the photo below was a $1 Goodwill find that I painted Heirloom White. The jade dishes were from a family member. I think they are antique, I have no idea if they have any value. The white dishes are my everday dishes so I might need to pick up a couple white plates from the dollar store so I can have my regular dishes back for eating!

I'm still tinkering around with different accent pieces and working on an arrangement for the cabinets on the opposite wall. Overall I think it looks a bit prettier up there now than the blank emptiness it was for the past several months. The best part is that it didn't cost me a dime.

  1. Sara,

This looks really nice. The green is so "springy". Are you ready for spring? I AM!

  2. Hi Sara! I just had to pop over cuz we just left practically the same comment on a White Wednesday blog at the same time! I thought that was just too funny!

Your display on top of your cabinets looks great! So crisp & clean!

  3. I think everything would look "crisper" if you removed the towels from the oven handle...that's where my eyes were drawn.

  6. Great arrangements. I'm particularly interested in this because we have the exact same cabinets (except I put knobs and pulls on them) and the walls are also yellow. Right now I have cookbooks/plants/wine bottles/a basket up there. The cookbooks look great but I have to stand on a chair to get them. The plants (your typical "devil's ivy" or whatever it's called) work well but since they trail a bit they can get caught in the doors. The wine bottles are getting to be a bit too much... I put up the nice ones from special occasions, with dates and the occasion written on them, but now there are too many. I like your fresh green plates... I think I might switch some things out.

  7. The lantern was from Marshall's last year. It was on clearance for around $6 I think.

  8. Hi! Thanks for your Bible verse too:)
I had the same cabinets in our previous home and you are right...painting them totally makes the stuff on top look better...but I
L-O-VE where you are headed with it. The color scheme is great...I almost wonder if you could leave the 2 clustered vignettes and come up with something big to go in between...a giant birdcage or lantern or whatever fits your taste...
Jadite dishes are very valuable!! And add grate flair in small dashes...keep 'em and
    l-o-ve 'em!!
I'm new too all this blog stuff but you might enjoy mine like I did yours:)

  9. Those look great on top of your cabinets. I can't wait to read and look at your other ideas. :-) And, yes, the jade dishes are definitely worth a little bit. Look up Fire King on eBay. :-) I wouldn't sell them, though. They're too beautiful.

You have so much talent. :-)
