Colorado Trip Part 1-Colorado Springs

I'm back with the first installment of our journey. We spent the first two nights of our trip in Colorado Springs. We spent the first afternoon mostly just hanging out and resting after our 14 hour drive to get there. We couldn't sleep the night before so we just decided to leave at 2 am and we arrived in Colorado Springs around 3:30.

The next day after a nice breakfast at our hotel, we set off to explore Garden of the Gods park. The park is full of beautiful rock formations and there are trails and roads running all around the formations. We spent a couple hours wondering around and marveling at many varied formations. It's a really neat place and a must see if you are in the area.

After we were done at Garden of the Gods, we decided to take a trip up Mt. Baldy. We had taken my husband's Jeep, so we were prepared for travel on rough roads where 4-wheel drive is neccessary. It was a long 2 hour journey to the top. The route followed an old stage coach road and railroad bed. There were some great views of Colorado Springs along the way.

Driving up Mt. Baldy outside Co.Springs.

The road was rough and rocky with many narrow shelf roads. If you are afraid of heights, this is not the route for you.

Watch for falling rock

Finally we made it to the top and were rewarded with a wonderful overlook of the city below. There was also an old water resevoir at the top that we were told is from the 1800s. It seemed like a long, rough way to go for water!

We headed back to our hotel for a nap before dinner. It was raining that evening and when we left the restaurant after dinner there was a gorgeous double rainbow to greet us.

Double rainbow over Co. Springs, nice surprise after dinner.

Overall, I fell in love with Colorado Springs. The town is beautiful with the mountains all around and there is a lot of green space all about the town. It never felt crowded and traffic was pretty light. I'll be back with more stories and photos, so stay tuned.

  4. Ah, you were in my neck of the woods!

September is probably the best time of year to visit C Springs so you miss the "tourist" traffic, the weather is usually quite pleasant and it's just a great time of year to be here.

Haha, and on that last pic, you were on Garden of the Gods Road, I am guess at the 7-11. ;-)

Colorado Springs born and raised so if you come back to the Springs, hit me up and I will suggest some restaurants or things to do that most from out of town wouldn't know about. Glad my fellow citizens treated you well.
