From Boy Bathroom Blah to Beautiful Bath

I wanted to share the before and after photos of my mother-in-law's bathroom. This is the bathroom that was used by my husband and his two brothers growing up. Now that they are all out of the house, it was time for a change to something more elegant and feminine.

Here's the before with the blue walls, pink vanity top, and under the sea theme:

And here's the delightful after:

The walls received a fresh coat of paint in a nice, neutral color. The shower curtain was replaced with the white and gray one from Target. The gray matching towels, white roman shade curtain, and white soap pump with silver accents are also Target finds. The black and white flower photos are ones Diana took herself of her own flowers and framed in $4 silver frame found on clearance.

Of course, the biggest change is no more pink countertop! Yes, you can paint your countertop. She used Benjamin Moore oil based enamel and sanded between coats. If it was a high use bathroom, a coat of polyurethane would be a good idea.

Here is one of the most helpful links if you are interested in attempting this on your bathroom or kitchen laminate countertops:

  1. Wow, I totally could not help myself scrolling through all the marvelous photos on your blog, you and I have similiar tastes, I love a coffered ceiling in a kitchen, modern country style with warm sunny colors. Keep up the good work!!

  2. I'm bowled over by the painted countertop!! How has it held up for your mother-in-law? That was a gutsy move, and definitely looks like it paid off. :)

  3. She just painted it a week ago, but it is in a bathroom that is mostly only used for guests so it doesn't get a lot of abuse. From what we read online from others that have done this, it will hold up fairly well. People even do this with their kitchen countertops, although I don't know if I would be that brave because of all the wear and tear. You can apply a coat of polyurethane for the surface to hold up better.

  4. It looks great, I bet she wishes she'd done it long ago.

  5. JenM!
I am so sad I didn't try this earlier. I see those before shots and cringe!

    Liz!
So far it's holding up well, even though the hammer and drill were clunked on it a few times while Hubs was hanging the new light (home depot) and towel racks. I may still go back and add a coat of polyurethane later this summer.
